Fear and Hatred of the Other

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

I don’t understand it. Part of me doesn’t want to understand it, either; as with exploring the motives of pedophiles, it leaves me queasy and shaken in any kind of belief in the basic goodness of mankind. However, I should understand it in order to better combat it…I suppose…meh…it’s really hard to work up enthusiasm for plunging your hands into untreated sewage, you know?

Two news items today: One is Sarah Palin’s admittedly very funny Twitter debacle, where she confuses “not knowing what existing words mean” with “inventing new words.” Is she too stupid to be embarrassed? But aside from the vocabulary funzies, this was the sentiment:

Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing.

I feel unprovoked and unstabbed. Really. Now, the case could be made that I am not a New Yorker and therefore, perhaps, am missing some special degree of angst that would make this all explicable; however, Sarah Palin’s not one either. And in my case, I was actually within some geographical proximity of 9/11 events. Anybody remember this..?

(The US Pentagon, 9/11)
…or this?

(Near miss of the US Capitol–in rural Pennsylvania about 20 minutes from DC)

There are lots of terrorists out there. I remember learning in the 5th grade that while all squares are rectangles, not all rectangles are squares. And in this case, it can’t even be claimed that well yes I’m sure not all Muslims are terrorists but all terrorists ARE Muslim, you know..! Neither Ted Kaczynski nor Timothy McVeigh were Muslims, for example. Since 1977, 41 abortion clinics have been bombed–forty-one!–and to the best of my knowledge, none of the bombers were even remotely Muslim. Among these were an abortion clinic and two physicians’ offices in Pensacola, Florida were bombed in the early morning of Christmas Day, 1984, by a quartet of young people (Matt Goldsby, Jimmy Simmons, Kathy Simmons, Kaye Wiggins) who later called the bombings “a gift to Jesus on his birthday.”

I’ve also heard the argument that the Koran encourages Muslims to kill unbelievers. Gee, now there’s a point. I mean, just listen to these!

Suppose you hear in one of the towns that God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock.

If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him.

Whoever sacrifices to any god, except the Lord alone, shall be doomed.

They entered into a covenant to seek the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord their God was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman.

Oops, wait!…those are from the Bible.

This, and the ongoing furor over illegal immigrants, has really led me down a depressing path. “Several states” (reported variously as nine, ten or twelve depending on where I’m looking) are supposedly following Arizona’s lead in obsessing about their undocumented worker populations. Why the obsession..? I’ve heard it variously and defensively described as “Well they’re breaking the LAW don’t you CARE about the LAW?” (frequently put forth by people who regularly speed, jaywalk, cheat on their taxes and smoke weed–a rather selective reverence towards the LAW)

or

“Well they’re costing us MONEY WELFARE!” (Nevermind the fact that in 2008, the percentage of Arizona’s state budget going towards welfare was 12%…not exactly the lion’s share…and presumably even that isn’t somehow all being distributed to illegal aliens–how could it be?)

or

“Well they’re taking all our JOBS!” (FactCheck.org doesn’t agree.)

I’m pretty sure it all really boils down to one thing, and for that one thing, see the title of this post.

…lol.

Maybe I should consider moving on to something, or someone, a little more challenging.

…but you know, it’s really kind of okay to “call a bunch of people who are retards, retards!” As long as it’s Rush Limbaugh doing it.

Remember this?

According to the Wall Street Journal, Rahm Emanuel called liberal activists who wanted to run ads against conservative Democrats “f—— retarded” in a closed-door meeting at the White House. On her Facebook page, Palin likened Emanuel’s “slur on all God’s children with cognitive and developmental disabilities” to using the “N-word,” something she deemed “unacceptable” and “heartbreaking.” Emanuel later issued an apology to Special Olympics chairman and CEO Tim Shriver.

However, Palin’s conservative cohort Rush Limbaugh took offense to people, presumably including Palin, protesting Emanuel’s remark. On his radio show, Limbaugh lamented that “our political correct society is acting like some giant insult’s taken place by calling a bunch of people who are retards, retards.” That comment caused Greg Sargent to request a reaction from Palin’s spokeswoman.

Yesterday, when asked for comment on Limbaugh’s use of the “r” word in a recent broadcast, Palin spokeswoman told Greg Sargent of the Washington Post, “Governor Palin believes crude and demeaning name-calling at the expense of others is disrespectful.”

BUT!

Today, Stapleton claims the statement was meant generally and she was not specifically referring to Limbaugh.

…I mean, if he’s gonna tirelessly promote her new book after also tirelessly promoting her for Veep during the 2008 elections...it’s not like he’s some kind of nasty, sneaking D-e-m-o-c-r-a-t, after all!

Rahm Emanuel Refers to Fellow Dems as “F—ing Douchebags,” Palin Takes to Her Facebook Page to Demand President Obama Fire Him for Sexist Slur

…or something like that.

Since the “death panel” strategy didn’t work…you know, I don’t feel sorry for Trig Palin because he has Down Syndrome. It’s always hard to have a disability of any description and I of course do feel compassion for anyone who has to struggle with one, but any perusal of the writings of the parents of Down Syndrome kids will quickly show you that the mere fact of having Down Syndrome is in no way a guarantee of a miserable existence. But I admit I do feel sorry for him for his mother’s relentless shoving of him into the political limelight as an inanimate talking point.

Sarah Palin Smokes Some Weed, Hallucinates Plot By Dems To Euthanize Trig

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Here she goes!

The Democrats promise that a government health care system will reduce the cost of health care, but as the economist Thomas Sowell has pointed out, government health care will not reduce the cost; it will simply refuse to pay the cost. And who will suffer the most when they ration care? The sick, the elderly, and the disabled, of course. The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s “death panel” so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their “level of productivity in society,” whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.

I agree, Thomas Sowell has sort of said that, along with a lot of other crap that clearly lodged itself in Sarah’s one brain cell and is responsible for the above stoned-sounding babble. To quote his crap more precisely:

The government does not have some magic wand that can “bring down the cost of health care.” It can buy a smaller quantity or lower quality of medical care, as other countries with government-run medical care do.

It can decide not to spend as much money on the elderly as is being spent now. That can save a lot of money — if you think having a parent die earlier is a bargain.

The idea of a “duty to die” has been making some headway in recent years around the fringes of the left. It is perfectly consistent with the fundamental notion of the left, that decisions should be transferred from ordinary citizens to government elites.

To briefly address his rather astonishing claim that all other countries with government-run medical care offer either less medical care or lower quality medical care–and what metrics are we using to make this sweeping statement, one can’t help but wonder? According to the WHO, in 2000, although the U.S. spent a higher portion of its gross domestic product on its health care system than any other member country, it ranked 37 out of the 191 countries in terms of actual performance. The WHO used not just one but five performance metrics to determine its rankings:

1. overall level of population health;
2. health inequalities (or disparities) within the population;
3. overall level of health system responsiveness (a combination of patient satisfaction and how well the system acts);
4. distribution of responsiveness within the population (how well people of varying economic status find that they are served by the health system);
5. and the distribution of the health system’s financial burden within the population (who pays the costs).

One could hardly accuse the WHO of underanalyzing the situation–frankly, I suspect Sowell and Palin and the other loud objectors would consider this list far too comprehensive–after all, what do they care about no. 4? And the selfish hysteria they display in regards to no. 5 is pretty pathetic–

But aside from that, it’s the euthanasia contention that really interests me here. Specifically, what really interests me is the lovely portrait both the Palinator and Thomas Sowell appear to be painting of our current private health insurance system, where apparently everyone who has private health insurance finds that all their health care decisions, including end-of-life care, are made by the individual in concert with his loving doctor, with no other outside cost-based interference at all.

For a quick anecdotal reminder that, erm, this isn’t QUITE EXACTLY the case–I can’t be the only woman who gave birth in the early to mid-1990′s, right? And I know I’m not the only woman who got kicked out of the hospital less than 24 hours after giving birth, because the majority (if not all) of health insurance plans instituted a policy of flatly refusing to pay for longer than that, regardless of the fact that the standard postpartum stay recommended by physicians was 48-72 hours. In 1996, the federal government ended up passing legislation requiring health insurance companies to pay for a minimum of 48 hours, after the postpartum complication rate for both women and newborns abruptly began to soar. Oops!

For a less anecdotal statement of fact as to why that contention is total bullshit, save me some time. For those of you who have health insurance from a non-government source, please go look at your policy. I mean really look at it, not just skim over the co-pay and how much you have to fork out a month for you, you + 1 or you + 2 or more–read the whole damn policy. And tell me what care your health insurance company–not you or your doctor–what medical decisions about your care that your health insurance company does not now control already that the government suddenly would.

I think you’ll find that there aren’t any. All you’re doing by switching from private to public, folks, is changing masters–and it’s worth a think or two that you’re changing to a master that you do at least have some elective control over, eh?

(Note to Sarah: To the best of my knowledge, dear, nobody in either the private or the public sector is recommending the euthanization of babies with Down Syndrome. So really, you can relax!)

I Think Sarah Palin Just Announced That She’s Becoming a Domestic Terrorist

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Anybody got a better read on this rather bizarre little speech?

I may be giving her too much credit, though–she also seems to be hinting that her abrupt and apparently reasonless resignation as Governor of Alaska this morning is simply a delayed snit over the fact that Obama won the presidential election. Or maybe Bristol’s pregnant again! and this time the baby’s father is a Democrat and the Palinator is finally having a nervous breakdown over her eldest daughter’s relentless sabotaging of her political career. It’s hard to tell; her sentences so seldom make any sense either internally or taken in groups of two or more at a time that it’s impossible to say how much of their incoherence is due to stress and how much of it is due to just being not too bright.

Desecration!

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

As you all know, my life has been rather fraught lately–the deepest and most meaningful of analytical thought processes are still a bit beyond my grasp. Luckily for me, there are a plethora of pathetically easy targets for my currently dulled wit just lying around out there. It’s so therapeutic, too–no matter how low I’m feeling at any given moment, say, I can always look at stuff like this and think to myself, “You know, it could be so much worse–I could be one of Sarah Palin’s kids. Gaaaah!”

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is again sharply responding to the appearance of her children in the public sphere.

Palin’s latest response comes after liberal Alaskan Blogger Linda Kellen Biegel doctored a photograph of the former Republican vice presidential candidate with her 1-year-old son Trig, who suffers from Down Syndrome.

Trig, Trig, which one is he…oh yeah, he’s that life-size “Pro-Life!” dolly she glues to her suit front before every news conference. Oh now come on, she can’t be mad AGAIN that people somehow can’t avoid noticing the appearance of her children in the public sphere, I mean, all she’d have to do is stop wearing ‘em around 24/7 like tattoos, right..?

“Recently we learned of a malicious desecration of a photo of the Governor and baby Trig that has become an iconic representation of a mother’s love for a special needs child,” Palin spokeswoman Meghan Stapelton said in a statement provided to CNN. “The mere idea of someone doctoring the photo of a special needs baby is appalling.”

Wow, I have been out of touch. I was totally unaware that some photo some unknown individual snapped one day of Palin carting Trig around was the 21st-century version of Raphael’s Madonna and Child. When did that vote take place, and is it too late in the day for me to cast one..?

Stapelton also suggested President Obama should speak out against such behavior from liberal activists.

Can’t imagine why she would. According to the Palinator, President Obama “is someone who sees America as being so imperfect that he’s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country.” Unless the desecration of her holy Trig photo is a worse crime than palling around with terrorists! (It might be, too. After all, that’s like, an affront against G-O-D.)

Yep, keep ‘em coming, people! I’m not ready to have to do any real thinking yet. :D

Well, I called that one, didn’t I?

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

From my prescient self, just a few weeks ago:

It’s also quite the mystery why [Bristol Palin] hasn’t married good old Levi yet. Her lack of enthusiasm for that eventuality pretty much oozes out of the screen, and the only time she ever brings him up is when the interviewer directly asks her about him.

And hot off the People magazine presses today:

Bristol Palin and her fiancé Levi Johnston have broken up, two sources tell PEOPLE.

The split happened “a few weeks ago,” according to a source close to the couple, but it’s unclear what precipitated it. “It was a mutual thing,” adds the source.

Bristol, the 18-year-old daughter of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, spoke with FOX News in February and told Greta Van Susteren that she and Levi – who are parents to 2-month-old son, Tripp – expected to get married after they completed high school.

“It kind of just happened,” says the source, referring to the split. “I thought they would stick it out. But I think they can work together to raise Tripp.”

“I’m not sure what caused [them to break up] – it’s common knowledge,” says another source who knows the family.

So let me get this entirely straight…Bristol Palin is choosing to be an unwed teen mother when she could have been a wed teen mother instead.

This does remind me of that small news item from last year:

Palin Slashed Funding for Teen Moms

ST. PAUL — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee who revealed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, earlier this year used her line-item veto to slash funding for a state program benefiting teen mothers in need of a place to live.

Photobucket

After the legislature passed a spending bill in April, Palin went through the measure reducing and eliminating funds for programs she opposed. Inking her initials on the legislation — “SP” — Palin reduced funding for Covenant House Alaska by more than 20 percent, cutting funds from $5 million to $3.9 million. Covenant House is a mix of programs and shelters for troubled youths, including Passage House, which is a transitional home for teenage mothers.

According to Passage House’s web site, its purpose is to provide “young mothers a place to live with their babies for up to eighteen months while they gain the necessary skills and resources to change their lives” and help teen moms “become productive, successful, independent adults who create and provide a stable environment for themselves and their families.”

I mean, why reward those little sluts for their out-of-wedlock shenanigans with da gubment cheeze? If they’d just marry the father, then they’d already have a place to live! …er, right, Bristol..? and Sarah..?

Of course, Bristol Palin doesn’t need the services of Passage House. She’s being supported by the woman who did her best to gut their funding–wonder how well that sits with her..? Then again, I didn’t get the impression from Bristol’s Faux News interview that she’s in possession of a stellar or incisive intellect, so perhaps such thoughts have not troubled her brain. Or perhaps she’s just keeping as silent as possible on the subject to stretch out her parents’ support of her unwed teen motherhood as long as humanly possible–God knows I would, in her position.

Watching Bristol Palin Make It Pretty Clear (without actually having to SAY so outright and REALLY piss her mother off) That Not Only Is It Ridiculous to Imagine that Teens Won’t Be Screwing Even If You Tell Them Not To, They Should Really Use Contraception When They Do

Video here.*

It’s also quite the mystery why she hasn’t married good old Levi yet. Her lack of enthusiasm for that eventuality pretty much oozes out of the screen, and the only time she ever brings him up is when the interviewer directly asks her about him. Otherwise, when she talks about her daily life as a mom and student, it’s all about her family. Particularly stupid question from the interviewer: “So you had no idea what raising a baby would be like?” Bristol stares at her and then clarifies that no, what she had no idea like was what it would feel like to have to change her own personal priorities to include how they would affect her son during his upbringing. When the interviewer returns to that theme again later in the interview, Bristol basically reminds her that not only has she been Mother’s little helper in terms of her younger siblings as far back as she can remember, her mother just gave birth to yet another child not too long before she got knocked up herself–so yeah, she really knew her way around a “onesie” already.

Interesting interview. Lots of nuance.

*Faux News has a, er, helpful feature under its embedded videos, described as “Automatically Generated Transcript (may not be 100% accurate).” Wow, it’s a good thing they include that disclaimer! Though you can have lots of fun with it–here’s a small sample of Bristol Palin talking about being a new mother:

“That’s what I expected. It’s just — different. He had no hint of led the short of the demands have been in Atlanta but not just that they — it’s just like I’m not living for myself meaning like flake. For another person that’s different. If you — talking a year ago and I said that — gonna happen in line with the UN told me.”

Miss America

The McCain campaign has refused to give up Heart’s “Barracuda,” in spite of the Wilson sisters’ very vocal protests, as Sarah Palin’s theme song.

I think this 70′s song suits her much, much better. Maybe someone should give the McCain campaign a head’s up? :)

Lyrics below the fold, for anybody interested.

“Idiot Wind!”

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

(snork!)

Gov. Sarah Palin on Wednesday said Sen. Barack Obama has ties to a Columbia University professor who she said is “a former spokesperson for the Palestinian Liberation Organization.” Palin said her assertion “is not negative campaigning to call someone out on their record.”

“It seems that there is yet another radical professor from the neighborhood who spent a lot of time with Barack Obama going back several years,” Palin said at an event in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Khalidi is a leading scholar of Middle Eastern studies at Columbia, and he was a contemporary of Obama’s while on the faculty of the University of Chicago. Khalidi has been a harsh critic of U.S. foreign policy toward Israel and has accused the country of “occupying” Palestinian territories. But he has denied acting as a PLO spokesman during a seven-year period in the 1970s and 1980s.

Khalidi said Wednesday, “I am not speaking to the media at this time, and certainly not until this idiot wind passes.

That’s just awesome. I wish I’d thought of that. How appropos!

The paper reported that a young Palestinian-American woman recited a poem at the farewell party that accused the Israeli government of terrorism for its treatment of Palestinians and was highly critical of U.S. support of Israel.

Being critical of U.S. support of Israel + being connected to anything associated in American pop culture with Muslims = terrorist ties. Which means that since I am friends with a Lebanese dude, I’m probably a “Hamas spokesperson.” And we’d best not go anywhere near what my OTHER friendship with an Iranian dude named, of all things, Hossein says about me. I should probably stop fighting the exposure trend, haul my dynamite-lined burqa out of the closet and just openly wear that bitch with pride.

The McCain campaign accused the Los Angeles paper of “intentionally suppressing” a videotape it obtained from that dinner and demanded that it release the footage. The Times said it won’t release the footage because a reporter promised a source that the video would not be made public.

Asked why the McCain campaign was bringing the matter up six months after the article appeared, an aide replied, “Because we are one week away from potentially electing Barack Obama.”

Heee! You KNOW it’s bad when they’re openly admitting it’s an act of last-minute desperation.

Earlier Wednesday, Palin delivered her second policy address of the campaign season.

Leaving it a little late, aren’t you, Sarey? Or maybe we shouldn’t even open that can of worms right now…

Palin pointed to her experience as governor as evidence she can help the U.S. achieve energy security.

“Whatever the good ol’ boys are running these days, I know it’s not the state of Alaska,” she said in Toledo, Ohio.

Er,Ted Stevens? ….Ted Stevens….Ted Stevens..?

The Alaska governor stressed expanding drilling, using nuclear power and tapping into the “American ingenuity” to solve the energy problem.

Tapping into the “American ingenuity” as a domestic self-sustaining energy source!

Well, it’s a thought, but I think the movie pretty much proved that it isn’t really that good an idea in the long run.

I can’t read any more. Teh stupid, it burns!

Piggy vs Fozzie

Saturday, October 4th, 2008
http://www.mynameisearlkress.com/weblog/Piggyfozzie.jpg

As I mentioned in comments, I actually stopped watching the veep debate in favor of old episodes of the Muppet Show. I know, cheap escapism, but it sure felt good.

So, afterward I brought myself up to speed by reading Dennis Perrin’s debate transcript, and now I feel very enlightened.

...

IFILL: We’ll stay with you, Governor. What is your view about gays in society? Do you support gay marriage?

PALIN: I’m soooo tickled you asked me that, Gwen. First, let me say that I’m very tolerant of homosexuals. I’ve known a few in my life, and have even shaken their hands on occasion — wearing surgical gloves, of course. This dress was designed by a homosexual in Anchorage named Paprika, and he wears a turban and a monocle. So I’m pretty comfy with the gays. As for them marrying each other, excuse me but ewwwwwwww! It makes my tummy squishy. I mean, gracious, who’s the wife and who’s the husband? Is it the hairier gay? In my view, marriage should be between a man and a woman, or a teenage boy and girl, especially if she’s about to be a “Baby Mama.” (laughs to herself) That was my Tina Fey impression.

IFILL: Very funny, Governor. Sen Biden?

BIDEN: Gwen, Sen. Obama and myself also oppose gay marriage, but we accept gay couples, especially those in higher tax brackets who contribute money to our campaign. Gay people can do whatever they want — one-on-one, in groups, through glory holes, using toys and gels, wearing leather masks — but they can’t get married. And I say that as someone who, as a younger man, sucked dick to make ends meet. From Wilmington to Scranton, in train stations, bus terminals, alleys, the backseats of cars. Ten bucks a pop, at least eight times a day. And while that stretch of my life prepared me for a political career, it didn’t prepare me for marriage. That was a whole different set of muscles.

Lots more enlightenment where that came from.
