Sabrina, thanks for the encouragement! :) At the moment, I'm in a particularly busy time with a big project, so I don't really have time to post anything unless I made it really short, kind of like this one was. But I do have a lot on my mind, about precisely the issues that the link you're referring to me takes up. I've been arguing a lot recently with a very good friend over just the issue that Greta Christina takes on: voting for Obama as "supporting the lesser evil" vs voting for Obama as "harm reduction". Neither his nor Christina's arguments sway me yet-- it's not that they are fundamentally unreasonable, it's just that we have a fundamental difference in the axioms we start our reasoning with. (And by the way, I'm not looking for perfection in a candidate. Really! But I need some ray of sunshine to grasp on to.)

Tell you what, I'll try to write a short one tonight outlining my views. Doubt it'll sway anyone, but maybe it'll at least tide you over for a bit!

I agree with you, Quin. Neither side is perfect, but, if I could, let me direct you to someone who is way more eloquent and insightful than I could ever be. And by the way, its been almost a week, we need a newer post :) I miss your lefty rants.

That is basically the decision to be able to be able to be left to faiths and people who practice their faiths the determination what you call it.

So, does that mean that heterosexual atheists, having no faith, can't get married, either?

What does that mean?

Too true. I hadn't actually read the "real" transcript (though I suspect D Perrin's manages to find a deeper truth), but your comment spurred me to look up their real comments on the subject of gay marriage.

IFILL: Let's try to avoid nuance, Senator. Do you support gay marriage?

BIDEN: No. Barack Obama nor I support redefining from a civil side what constitutes marriage. We do not support that. That is basically the decision to be able to be able to be left to faiths and people who practice their faiths the determination what you call it.

The bottom line though is, and I'm glad to hear the governor, I take her at her word, obviously, that she think there should be no civil rights distinction, none whatsoever, between a committed gay couple and a committed heterosexual couple. If that's the case, we really don't have a difference.

IFILL: Is that what your said?

PALIN: Your question to him was whether he supported gay marriage and my answer is the same as his and it is that I do not.

IFILL: Wonderful. You agree. On that note, let's move to foreign policy.

(LAUGHTER)

Ha ha ha! Ho ho ho! Hee hee hee!

BIDEN AND PALIN: (in unison) Separate but equal!

They look at each other for a beat; then suddenly--

BIDEN AND PALIN: Jinx!

They both giggle, and the audience explodes in raucous guffaws.

Not as bad as hearing all the posturing against gay marriage from both sides. I HATE mindless prejudice; it offends me intellectually.

I'm glad I missed the first 20 minutes or so of the debate now. I can see that it would have made my teeth grind.
