Piggy vs Fozzie

As I mentioned in comments, I actually stopped watching the veep debate in favor of old episodes of the Muppet Show. I know, cheap escapism, but it sure felt good.

So, afterward I brought myself up to speed by reading Dennis Perrin’s debate transcript, and now I feel very enlightened.

...

IFILL: We’ll stay with you, Governor. What is your view about gays in society? Do you support gay marriage?

PALIN: I’m soooo tickled you asked me that, Gwen. First, let me say that I’m very tolerant of homosexuals. I’ve known a few in my life, and have even shaken their hands on occasion — wearing surgical gloves, of course. This dress was designed by a homosexual in Anchorage named Paprika, and he wears a turban and a monocle. So I’m pretty comfy with the gays. As for them marrying each other, excuse me but ewwwwwwww! It makes my tummy squishy. I mean, gracious, who’s the wife and who’s the husband? Is it the hairier gay? In my view, marriage should be between a man and a woman, or a teenage boy and girl, especially if she’s about to be a “Baby Mama.” (laughs to herself) That was my Tina Fey impression.

IFILL: Very funny, Governor. Sen Biden?

BIDEN: Gwen, Sen. Obama and myself also oppose gay marriage, but we accept gay couples, especially those in higher tax brackets who contribute money to our campaign. Gay people can do whatever they want — one-on-one, in groups, through glory holes, using toys and gels, wearing leather masks — but they can’t get married. And I say that as someone who, as a younger man, sucked dick to make ends meet. From Wilmington to Scranton, in train stations, bus terminals, alleys, the backseats of cars. Ten bucks a pop, at least eight times a day. And while that stretch of my life prepared me for a political career, it didn’t prepare me for marriage. That was a whole different set of muscles.

Lots more enlightenment where that came from.

I’m glad I missed the first 20 minutes or so of the debate now. I can see that it would have made my teeth grind.

    The rest didn’t?

Not as bad as hearing all the posturing against gay marriage from both sides. I HATE mindless prejudice; it offends me intellectually.

Too true. I hadn’t actually read the “real” transcript (though I suspect D Perrin’s manages to find a deeper truth), but your comment spurred me to look up their real comments on the subject of gay marriage.

IFILL: Let’s try to avoid nuance, Senator. Do you support gay marriage?

BIDEN: No. Barack Obama nor I support redefining from a civil side what constitutes marriage. We do not support that. That is basically the decision to be able to be able to be left to faiths and people who practice their faiths the determination what you call it.

The bottom line though is, and I’m glad to hear the governor, I take her at her word, obviously, that she think there should be no civil rights distinction, none whatsoever, between a committed gay couple and a committed heterosexual couple. If that’s the case, we really don’t have a difference.

IFILL: Is that what your said?

PALIN: Your question to him was whether he supported gay marriage and my answer is the same as his and it is that I do not.

IFILL: Wonderful. You agree. On that note, let’s move to foreign policy.

    (LAUGHTER)

Ha ha ha! Ho ho ho! Hee hee hee!

BIDEN AND PALIN: (in unison) Separate but equal!

They look at each other for a beat; then suddenly–

    BIDEN AND PALIN: Jinx!

They both giggle, and the audience explodes in raucous guffaws.

…except for the 3-10% of the audience who are gay.

That is basically the decision to be able to be able to be left to faiths and people who practice their faiths the determination what you call it.

So, does that mean that heterosexual atheists, having no faith, can’t get married, either?

    What does that mean?

I agree with you, Quin. Neither side is perfect, but, if I could, let me direct you to someone who is way more eloquent and insightful than I could ever be. And by the way, its been almost a week, we need a newer post :) I miss your lefty rants.

Sabrina, thanks for the encouragement! :) At the moment, I’m in a particularly busy time with a big project, so I don’t really have time to post anything unless I made it really short, kind of like this one was. But I do have a lot on my mind, about precisely the issues that the link you’re referring to me takes up. I’ve been arguing a lot recently with a very good friend over just the issue that Greta Christina takes on: voting for Obama as “supporting the lesser evil” vs voting for Obama as “harm reduction”. Neither his nor Christina’s arguments sway me yet– it’s not that they are fundamentally unreasonable, it’s just that we have a fundamental difference in the axioms we start our reasoning with. (And by the way, I’m not looking for perfection in a candidate. Really! But I need some ray of sunshine to grasp on to.)

Tell you what, I’ll try to write a short one tonight outlining my views. Doubt it’ll sway anyone, but maybe it’ll at least tide you over for a bit!
