Technical problems?
Published by Quin October 1st, 2008 in Punkass!This is very odd. Yesterday I wrote a post here, which still exists, but it’s not showing up on the PunkAssBlog front page. Or at least not on my computer.
Does anyone else see it?
(I will delete this post once we sort out what’s going on here.)
UPDATE: I really don’t understand what’s going on here. I am successfully seeing those two posts on the main page when I access from a different computer… but when I go back to my original computer, they’re still not there. Even when rebooting and using a different browser, etc. Hmm.
ANOTHER UPDATE: It appears that leaving comments on the phantom posts resolves the issue. A solution that leaves me a little bewildered, but whatever. If you’re somebody who couldn’t see the “Number 9… Number 9…” post earlier, but now you can, I’d love it if you left a quick comment here just confirming that you can see it again.
FINAL UPDATE: I’ve given up, and made a new version of the old post. Hopefully, this was all just a weird fluke and it won’t happen again.
FINAL FINAL UPDATE, AND THIS TIME I REALLY MEAN IT: I momentarily roused Punkass Marc from deep meditation at his mountain retreat, and he showed me what was wrong. Details below in comments if you’re interested.
I’m not deleting this post after all. I feel it’s an important historical document of our times.
Delurking, just to confirm. I saw the post you wrote yesterday, then when I got home and looked again it was gone. I really wondered why it would have been removed. Now I can obviously see this one, but the other one is still 404.
Maybe it’s a consolation that somebody read the post, and found it interesting, even if it’s only a European lurker.

And why does “Number 9″ show up for me, but is a 404 for you?
Well, I’ve recreated the missing post with a quick cut/paste job, and that one appears to be out there now, at least. I guess I’ll just alert Punkass Marc to the problem and hope it was just a fluke. Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

I read a story by Isaac Asimov once about a guy who made a deal with a demon that he would get to singlehandedly save the human race. A week later, he’s miserable. It turns out that wherever he goes, it seems like things stop working or break around him. He can’t use a cash machine, he can’t even use a toaster. He’s lost his job, and his girlfriend, etc, etc. The demon explains to him that technology now won’t work around him anymore, but that in the far future, when he is an addled old codger, the man will get wheeled to the core of a malevolent supercomputer which is about to destroy all of humanity, and it will malfunction. So no rewards for saving the world until he is on the verge of death; and in the meantime, a very annoying life where nothing ever works for him.
Anyway, things stop working for me with probably just the same regularity as anyone else; but I like to pretend sometimes that I’ll be able to save the world with it some day.
By the way, there’s definitely weird stuff still going on here. For instance, this post’s comments don’t show up in the “comments” sidebar on the main page now.

Basically, if you’re a moderator here, once you’ve posted something, DON’T EVER re-edit it by hitting the “back” button. For some strange reason, this often causes a glitch where it sets the post to “Private” mode. So just do it the long way, through the dashboard.
