Ah, there. The majority of the human zygotes I just released into the world are residing in the tissue on the desk in front of me. That, too, is a scientific fact.

No, it’s not.

The scientific fact is that gametes are not human beings the way that zygotes, blastocysts, and embryos are. There is no right to life of a gamete, no more than your dandruff has a right to life.

However, conception changes all of that. From the moment of fertilisation, the egg changes; it develops a hard outer shell to keep out other sperm; DNA from the parents’ gametes mixes; and cell division begins. (Scientists can examine two-celled blastocysts and determine where the head will be.) The result is a complete human being at the earliest stage of life.

There is a tremendous amount of intellectual dishonesty required to pretend that foetuses (or embryos) are not living human beings. While I fully understand why most anti-lifers do not acknowledge this point – as to do so would be to admit that some humans in our society have a right to life, but the smallest, most vulnerable, and unwanted ones do not – it is, nevertheless, antagonistic towards basic biology.

Yep, that’s SO convincing biological evidence- going to an anti-choice website. Why don’t you try something a little more mainstream. AMA perhaps? You can’t make an assertion (everyone knows life begins at conception) and then make an argument based on that assertion. I don’t know that life begins at conception, in fact I highly doubt it does. But you can’t make an assertion, and then not back it up with any thing.

Neil, I love that my little reductio-ad-absurdum with 500 million single-celled sperm in a tissue is so obviously ridiculous to you. Whereas if I had 500 million petri dishes with one single-celled zygote each, and then I chucked them in a big sink and washed the dishes, you would call me the greatest mass murderer the world has ever known.

Excuse me while I go and try to find anywhere between 50 and 500 million women to bear a human child from each of them. Luckily, I needn’t worry about these women’s so-called “rights”– it’s clearly a life-and-death situation! And as you rightly point out, over 50% of these as-yet-unborn human beings will have a uterus, so that will surely help the numbers a bit for the next batch, which I’m… about… to produce… right… NOW.

Ah, I love not having a uterus and dictating their proper usage to those who do.
