I read Sabotabby’s most recent post, suffered strong pangs of empathy, then moved on with life til I nipped over to Pandagon and saw that Amanda had posted on it and linked to Feministe–and also to something called a Tim Blair. Following that last link, I found a page that can be accurately summarized thusly:
!!111Girls who swear have cooties!!11111 and feminists are stupid wussies111!!11 and guys who say feminist stuff are HOMOS*******!!1111!!
Though you’d think they wouldn’t, given the level of writing talent I observed above, apparently there are people out there who actually care what this dude has to say, leading me to ascertain that he has some kind of notoriety for something. Oh, I’m so uninformed! First I don’t know who Rachel Lucas is, now I don’t know who Tim Blair is…in my defense, I do know what Bernoulli’s equations are and can even use them to design a biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility, which I bet neither Rachel Lucas nor Tim Blair can do. (If that example seems appropos of nothing, I apologize–that’s what I was doing all last week and it’s permeating my brain. Even spending the day at the pool alternately marinating in chlorine and UV rays didn’t cook it out of me.)
Wikipedia is my favorite resource for stuff that I don’t really care about to the point where a flaw in the accuracy of the material presented would break my heart but that I am at the moment interested in, so I dutifully called up the page and typed in Tim Blair and clicked Search. And there it was!
Tim Blair is a journalist, commentator and blogger working in Sydney, Australia. His columns and blog are generally written in a humorous style, from a conservative viewpoint.
Isn’t a “humorous conservative” an oxymoron? Like “compassionate conservative?” Oh, well, it got George Bush elected; I suppose the same morons who fell for the latter are ripe pickin’s for the former. To continue–
In 2004, the Sydney Morning Herald said [blah blah wrote this voted that makes money off advertising] and has also written for Fox News.
Oh well, that’s all they needed to say in the first place! Passive-aggressive venom-dripping poorly disguised lack of actual incisive analytical intellect! Now I get it. “Humorous conservative!”
Blair is particularly critical of Islamofascism
HEY, me too. And “irregardless,” and “alright,” and many others–there are almost a million words in the English language, do we have to persist in using words that don’t really exist? Hey, maybe he and I have soulmate potential after all.
That’s most of the entry, except for an additional list of people he doesn’t like, of whom I recognize only Al Gore by name, and people he does like, none of whom I recognize by name.
Well, that’s that then–classifying Tim Blair in brain under “insignificant moron, cross-ref wingnut, cross-ref misogynist subclassification smarmy” (the other subclassification is rabid in case anyone was wondering) and then moving on to actual, interesting stuff.
Fixed. Yay cookies!
Tim Blair’s legs should grow together.
Confessions,
Well, it’s your comment, so you can word it the way you wish. I just didn’t think “trolling for websites” sounds right. If Tim’s outside –
(yes people, this is important!, we’ve got to get this straightened out)
– looking for an appropriate website to comment on, then he would be “trawling”, as in trawling for fish (i.e., the right website to link to). I would think he’d need to be inside the website in order to troll (i.e., make comments of a contrary nature that has the effect of disrupting or disturbing the flow of comments).
And for that matter, would he actually be trolling if he didn’t comment on Lisa’s blog? He’s just linking.
By the way, is it “websites” or “web sites”. And yes, I do this at Tim’s blog. And the other commenters do it to me. The little shits.
Re: websites vs web sites (or Web sites), that really depends on your house style. CMOS 15 favours Web sites. The Canadian Oxford dictionary favours the closed, lower-case compound websites, while Webster’s 11th aligns with CMOS.
Oh Joe, you’ve found me out! I went to a friend’s blog, say that a bunch of people were being idiots, and called them idiots. That’s totally the same thing as my friend posting a link up to someone’s blog that said something less-than-flattering and let loose the dogs of war! They’re totally compariable!
Alas, you have slain me! *dies*
a tim blair – a wanker with an army of sycophants
a tim blairite – a wanker with noting better to do than consume tim blair’s logorhea and do tim blair’s bidding (see also army of sycophants)
Is it just me, or do the admirers of this blog seem just a little bit defensive? You’ve now spent 30 or so comments informing yourselves and the fellows who came from Blair’s blog how superior you are to him and them. It’s odd how you don’t like George Bush because he ignores anyone who disagrees with him and does what he wants to do, but you don’t see much of a problem with ignoring people who disagree with you, doing what you want to do, and heaping a bunch of juvenile abuse on them to stroke your egos.
Four years ago it was you who were the ones taking all the abuse and not being in much of a position to dish any of it out, with the Right thinking that it had a stranglehold on politics. Now the situation is reversed, or at least has the potential to be reversed and most people think it will be to some degree. Do you really think that the pendulum won’t swing back some day? It doesn’t cost you anything to not be assholes, and it might be advantageous for the future. The Right would be in better shape if it hadn’t been so dismissive of the opposition the last eight years. Someday the same situation will happen to the Left.
But of course, nothing I just said will register at all, because this is a moral issue for the PunkAssBlogites or whatever you want to be called. Your opinions are so morally superior to you that extending common manners to those who disagree is unnecessary. It might even be wrong. But do remember that one day the roles will again reverse themselves, and everyone will be better off if maturity gets some kind of hold on the political class.
Silly me, of course it is just plain stupid to believe something like that.
*sigh* Just color me yet another minion of the great and terrible Tim-O-Blair.
That said, while I probably disagree with most of what you write (judging from the above snippets) I will defend to the death your ability to say it as long as you are a little bit funny about it!
And unlike most far-leftoids you have some cleverness here. So that’s nice. You should read your fellow traveler Margo Kingston. Or…*anything* on the NYT. Now there is a mirthless lot.
Exhibit A: http://fish.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/03/i-am-therefore-i-pollute/index.html?ref=opinion
Read the comments. Yeesh.
Oooo…and you do *auto-preview*. Me likey.
Hi Anna,
Not sure I follow you. I haven’t insulted anyone here. Tim Blair hasn’t insulted anyone here as far as I have been able to see. See his original “NOBODY WANTS TO MARRY A POTTYMOUTH” and “FAN CLUB EXPANDS” for further details.
Is it odd or malicious that Tim Blair would link to another blog with posts about Tim Blair? Wouldn’t most folks link to post about themselves?
I prefer clarity to agreement so there will be no further attempts to change your opinion. I just wanted to make my support known for Tim and that I think he is often a funny / enjoyable read. If you think I have insulted anyone – please know that was not my intent.
Have a good day and take care,
Joe
Chaos: Firstly, I didn’t see “the admirers of this blog” ignoring the people who came over from Blair’s blog. I did see them attempt to answer the points of the ones who put points forward, and mock the ones who wanted to engage in abuse. If you saw a specific instance of someone from the blog mocking a serious response, we can discuss that specific instance.
But more importantly, do you think that everyone who’s “the opposition” of Bush is going to be satisfied if or when Obama gets in? Do you really think that there are only two political positions, Right and Left, represented by the platforms of the US Republican and Democratic parties?
Now relax, honey. Mean old Timmy didn’t mean anything by it.
It’s funny that when Conservatives write in a humorous fashion, it’s generally to make fun of Libs words and actions. Libs write humor when it comes to things like Robert Novak or Tony Snow (or Tim Blair) being diagnosed with cancer. Ha ha…right libs?
Expand your horizons beyond the Huff Po, Daily Kos and MyDD and read P.J. O’Rourke’s All the Trouble in the World or Eat the Rich and compare that to every lib author. P.J. is light years ahead and I guarantee even your closed “progressive” mind will allow you to laugh out loud, something most libs do rarely unless it’s a joke about Reagan in hell or someone nicknaming the current president McChimpyhaliburton or something clever like that.
Relax darlin’, these mean Conservatives will go away soon and you’re traffic will go back to numbers below mine. It’s been awhile since I had Instapundit, LGF or even mean old Tim Blair link.
Sabo: Ha, we DO have three more heads–Violet, Quin and Antigone! This is so perfect. If only I had pics of all of us to have some serious Photoshop fun.
Chaos: When the President of the United States ignores other people and does what he wants to do and heaps abuse on others in his role as President, it’s a violation of his elected office and enormous responsibilities, wouldn’t ya think? As opposed to when some no-name engineer blogger type does it in her private life.
Just sayin’.
Scott: I almost never read HuffPo or Daily Kos and I’ve never read MyDD–if you’re interested in what I do read, feel free to check out the blogrolls on the upper left of the home page. I have periodically perused the sad efforts of conservative wingnuts to be “humorous;” given that said “humor” generally requires thinking that putting down some subset of humanity defined by a specific race, gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation is just screamingly hilarious, it just ain’t my cup of tea.
Marnanel: Oooh, don’t get us here started about the choices that lie before us during this election season. It can get ugly.
Joe: Um, actually, it is kind of unusual to put up a post about every blog that mentions you. I don’t know any other blogger who does that and even as small a blip as I am in the blogosphere, I’ve been mentioned on at least fifty or sixty other blogs that I know of and yet I still haven’t ever done it or seen a reason why I should…why would anyone want to? Update: The boyfriend, who used to run a website, informs me that this is a good way to artificially inflate and keep up the number of hits your website receives monthly, thus bringing in improved advertising dollars. Hey, I guess I just learned something new…
Anna: Now that’s a theory.
I must go check the IP logger.
Aww man, you guys are totally overreacting. I mean, dude, look: Tim is this way-cool guy, really chill, you know? Like, sometimes he’ll let us come over and wax his 1967 Camaro LTD while he reads passages from Iron John.
That might sound a bit heavy, but I just want everyone to take a breath and step back, and just appreciate how into cars this dude is, it’s awesome, and he shares that awesomeness with us.
After the waxing, and the tender cooing of the Iron John reading, we’ll take off our clothes for a dip in the pool. We float around aimlessly thinking of our favorite porn stars made up to look like our moms in the photos we’ve seen of them from the 50s. After Jerry arrives with the poppers, we inhale and rub our dicks together in a totally non-gay way. Fags are weird.
So that’s all I’m saying. Don’t knock a dude you don’t know. He’s just joking around. I know Tim, and I can tell you, there are only two things he takes seriously: cars and the quality of his poppers.
No worries.
“Passive-aggressive venom-dripping poorly disguised lack of actual incisive analytical intellect!”
So he’s a liberal now?
There’s one good thing: had no the irrepressible TimB not linked here, I wouldn’t have found it. I’ll have to add it to my blogroll.
Lisa, I know exactly what you mean with those two posts. I’m something of an essentialist, with an interest in how typically masculine and typically feminine brains differ, and also how this typicality is so variable that it makes no sense to use M or F even as coarse filters in most cases.
My studies indicate that, yes, neurology is different, and perhaps only 30% of mechanical engineers should be female, all other things being equal. But we don’t have 30% of mechanical engineers being women, do we? We have 1%. That can only be explained by social feedback – fewer women are interested and good at something, so it is seen as unfeminine, so it’s seen as undesirable, so fewer women are interested, so it’s even more unfeminine, so it’s even more undesirable… until the pressure to conform to some Doris Day stereotype is intense.
A good experiment would be to take mixed-sex identical twins with the same CV, and see how they get treated. Actually, we can come pretty close to that – see http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2008/08/04/20080804azw-rosenewsletter0808-ON.html
I came here via Tim Blair’s blog.
PUNKASSBLOG.COM (all capital letters) and an extended middle finger
And your point is …?
I’m impressed! I guess if I were to wade through this garbage I would find, no doubt, a very beautiful person.

Looks like no one cares.
Lisa, girl, you are so impressed with yourself that the angle of your nose tilt has caused your spine to curve backwards until your head is stuck up your arse.
You haven’t taken the time to read Tim Blair. You read wikipedia, the unreliable, about Blair, and you think because you can count you’re better than he is. If you did read Blair and your summary is an accurate representation of what you think he’s about, your numeracy skills might be fine, but your literacy ones suck.
Honey, if your mind were any more closed it would be out of business. As you design houses—if you do, try to put in a few windows. Open a few of them, it might do something for your mind.
No guys, guys, these girrrls are great. Don’t judge them for dripping prejudice and snark against visitors. I think indga is spot on, they read the wikipedia entry and made a mistake thats all.
Allow me to invite you ladies to our place to get to know us – come kangaroo shooting! You will get lots of meat that cats and dogs find irresistable, and after the messy work is done we can mules a few lambs over some nutritious beers.
Lisa Kansas wrote, The word must enter the language in accepted, common usage, which Islamofacism is not–being used only and solely by conservative wingnuts is not “common usage.” For instance, the verb “to Google” has made it into the dictionary, thereby earning the designation “neologism.”
Well, it’s a draft entry in the Oxford English Dictionary.
As proof, a temporary link to the entry is on its way to you at the lisa10dc address. I hope the OED and the NY Review of Books meet your standards.
Regards,
JimC
Mick sez: Looks like no one cares.
I sez, except Timmeh, Mick, EXCEPT TIM BLAIR!! He did link this blog because it mentioned him, didn’t he?
He cares.
Sad little fucker that he is.
Deedra,
” sez, except Timmeh, Mick, EXCEPT TIM BLAIR!! He did link this blog because it mentioned him, didn’t he?
He cares.
Sad little fucker that he is. ”
Tim may have wanted to entertain some of his readers by showing them just how a certain % of the cyberworld present themselves . Your blog quoted above illustrates his point rather well and says plenty about you and, presumably embarrasses a good number of those who inhabit this site to be associated with your views.
Such bitterness to me would suggest you just may be a sad little non Fucker….- geeze it sends some people snaky when they don’t get any doesn’t it darlin’ D .
Lisa, name one major or even semi-major Conservative blog that puts down or jokes of ones sexual orientation, ethnic makeup or gender. Hell, I’d be the first to out them for the racist, misogynistic, gay-baiting scumbags they are.
I note you didn’t mention anti-Semitic in your screed. Would that be because anti-Semitism is the exclusive domain of Liberals now?
Please list one specific blog and provide a link to back up your words.
And no, criticizng Obama for words or he’s said or calling him something like “thin-skinned” is not racist in any other place besides the nutroots blogosphere so that doesn’t count.
I’m waiting…
Hey Lisa, how about this for lib versus con humor:
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0808/Paris_Hilton_responds_Really.html
Paris Hilton labels John McCain “the old, wrinkly, white-haired dude” and McCain’s campaign retorts with humor. The Obama campaign retorts with “whatever.”
Yeah, real humor there.
“Lisa, name one major or even semi-major Conservative blog that puts down or jokes of ones sexual orientation, ethnic makeup or gender.”
i notice you’ve omitted racial overtones. i am assuming an oversight, and am linking this from our very own man in question timmy blair.
http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s1954733.htm
he gets done like a dinner by our public broadcaster. even worse is he tries, as an editor at the Daily Telegraph to defend the bulltish that is posted there. oh, and read the entire script (i’ve noticed blair’s fans don’t open links or read what is presented to them).
please keep me posted with your “outing them” for the racist scumbag timmy is.
About what I expected, Confessions. I said to point to a specific blogger who espouses racist, misogynistic or other low-life type sentiments. Instead you point me to Media Watch and condemn Blair for comments made by readers. Anyone who follows Aussie media even a little knows that Media Watch is hopelessly biased.
If you want to talk about commenters at sites, I can go through a long list at the Huff Po, Kos, FDL and others that would make you puke. The Huff Po has had to shut off comments numerous times because of the filth that posted there.
To sum up, you proved nothing by the link. As for Blair leaving the comments up, perhaps you need to understand what freedom of sppech is. I may disagree with what yu say but will fight like hell to allow you to say it. For “prgressives,” it’s more like “I will allow to say whatever you wish as long as I agree with it.”
For the record, I’ve never deleted a comment on my blog because I would rather let the world see what scum thoseon the opposite side are. No “bulltish” there.
Scott,
rather than go the predictable line of ‘media watch is biaised’, try reading what is supplied to you – there can be no bias as it is timmy’s and his readers words that are used. timmy and the daily telegraph were caned. pwned i believe.
there is also timmy’s revolting gutter stoop where he posed as tabloid sensationalist to reveal the ‘juicy’ separation details of a fellow blogger, and link his readers to various aspects of this person’s personal life for his baying sheep to bleat over. he lied about being a central figure in this, was called on it and proven as lying on what essentially is a public blog. as far as i know he’s still denying it. hardly edifying, but about what our timmy is capable of. just.
i note you write in the andrew bolt ‘name 10′ style. again this style of argument has been trounced for the argument-avoidance tactic it is. aout what i expected though. well done.
I believe I said name “one,” not ten. I’m not avoiding any argument because none has been made on your part. No links to Tim saying anything racist on his blog.
You seem to be apart of the Maureen Dowd cult where you throw things out and don’t actually provide proof. At least you avoided ellipses. Good for you.
Again, show me one major or middling Conservative blog that has posted anything misogynistic, racist or other type smear. I also noticed you didn’t address the anti-Semitism query. For that I give you numerous examples from the biggest of the “progressive” blogs:
http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/lgf-search.php?searchString=protocols
Keep jamming your fingers in your ears and saying “he’s lying” real loud and maybe the bad people who have proven you wrong will go away.
“Keep jamming your fingers in your ears and saying “he’s lying” real loud and maybe the bad people who have proven you wrong will go away.”
lol!! is this your stand up routine?
“I believe I said name “one,” not ten”
and i give you timmy. enough said.
“You seem to be apart of the Maureen Dowd cult ”
separated from moz? or part of? there is a difference.
“I also noticed you didn’t address the anti-Semitism query.”
not sure how jews are relevant. please explain. (lol, another stray-lism)
I tend to think that anti-Semitism ranks right up there with misogyny, bias against homosexuals and racism. Maybe you don’t quite see it that way.
You “gave me timmy” but it amounts to nothing. You have not proven anything.
I guess “apart” should been a part and that’s no “bulltish.”
Btw, did you click the link? Us cons never click through so i assume that you did, right?
Wacko, you’re full of hot air, because you’ve made so many assumptions, such as Timmeh’s reason for linking to this blog, right down to my not getting any.
Yeah, you sure told me.
Come back when you have something stronger. Otherwise, shut up and go back to Berowra.
Its fairly clear that Tim linked this blog mostly out of amusement with another excellent example of the “holier than thou” abuse that comes out of Leftardy Lane, Looneyville.
While I agree with your assessment that “he cares” Deedra, Im pretty sure its not for why youd like to think. He cares because annoying fringe left idealists into abusing him is his idea of a bit of fun, and this kind of abuse is a trophy. T
Rhe link would also have been partially motivated by a chance to belittle the owner with the fact that with a mere one line link on a fairly irreverant blog otherwise run by an “insignificant moron, cross-ref wingnut, cross-ref misogynist subclassification smarmy” the traffic recieved by a deadly serious, abusive and hateful yet completely insignificant blog run by lunatic fringe leftards is blown out of its normal proportions for a few days. Call it an e-flex of blog muscle.
Now that the last of “Timmeh”‘s readers have stopped coming here you can all go back to agreeing with each other on why drugs are good and humans aught not to have the right to own land. Is it time for a group hug yet? Where is my herbal tea? Damn the capitalists!
He cares because annoying fringe left idealists into abusing him is his idea of a bit of fun, and this kind of abuse is a trophy.
*giggle* *snrk* *YOMANK*
You don’t even know how ironic that is, do you?
Zing: zing!
They may have mostly crawled back into the woodwork by now…looks pretty quiet, anyway…I do owe a few more responses, though, so I’ll crank those out and then move on (no Internet access yesterday, tragically):
flying monkey: A draft dictionary entry is definitely progress in the, er, right direction.
Scott: I haven’t really read much in the way of conservative blogs; I formed my opinion of conservative “humor” from listening to Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter. Here they are trying to be funny:
Ann-”I think we had enough laws about the turn-of-the-century. We don’t need any more.” Asked how far back would she go to repeal laws, she replied, “Well, before the New Deal … [The Emancipation Proclamation] would be a good start.”
“I think [women] should be armed but should not [be allowed to] vote. No, they all have to give up their vote, not just, you know, the lady clapping and me. The problem with women voting — and your Communists will back me up on this — is that, you know, women have no capacity to understand how money is earned. They have a lot of ideas on how to spend it. And when they take these polls, it’s always more money on education, more money on child care, more money on day care.”
Rush-”She comes to me when she wants to be fed. And after I feed her — guess what — she’s off to wherever she wants to be in the house, until the next time she gets hungry. She’s smart enough to know she can’t feed herself. She’s actually a very smart cat. She gets loved. She gets adoration. She gets petted. She gets fed. And she doesn’t have to do anything for it, which is why I say this cat’s taught me more about women, than anything my whole life.”
“Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons.”
They’re probably two of the biggest “funny” conservative speakers and writers out there.
Wow.
I don’t get this “_______s have no sense of humor!” argument, though I see it all the time (from BOTH sides).
Does anyone really believe that a certain political viewpoint renders one unable to laugh? I feel ashamed when my fellow liberals feel comfortable putting everyone to the right of them in the same box. Talk about generalization.
My political viewpoints put me at odds with conservatives on a frequent basis. However, they are also a big part of my life: my whole family, my bosses, and our clients are all very conservative. Some of them aren’t funny, some are hilarious. Every person is different–there are as many types of personalities as there are political opinions. When I do meet some conservative dick who makes degrading jokes, acts superior or racist, or otherwise makes me feel queasy, I tell him where to shove it. But I don’t rake that anger out on every other conservative!
The vast majority of conservatives aren’t like that. I have problems with their political opinions, but I respect them as people. When my boss says something that could sound racist, I gently tell him how it sounded and he really does take it to heart. He’s slowly getting over his fear of different people and cultures and we engage in friendly (albeit sometimes heated) debate frequently.
Real discussion and understanding will never ever breach the party gap until we can set aside generalization and personal attacks. Don’t throw personal attacks until someone proves they deserve them, and then don’t take it out on the other side.
Fellow liberals, most of you are pretty good at walking the “don’t stereotype” talk–until it comes to conservatives. Maybe if we showed a little more respect of individuals, they would be more open to our hearing our voices.
I think there’s a difference between “unable to laugh” and “unable to be funny.” Most people are able to laugh, even my uptight and uber-religious relatives. The difference is that what they laugh about (middle-brow Jewish humour, oy!) is not actually funny to people like me. And when I try to be funny, it doesn’t read as such to them, because what I find funny is what they would find tasteless, depressing, or just plain absurd.
There are even more pronounced differences along political lines. Politics, especially in North America, is in many ways defined by cultural taboo. What you find to be taboo influences your politics, and vice versa. And so much humour is based on what is taboo that one’s politics often weigh very heavily on what you find funny. How many conservatives, for example, are going to find Dan Savage’s humour funny, given that conservativism in America is defined as much by one’s view of queer people as it is by economics? How many liberals are going to find
Michael WeinerMichael Savage funny, given that his humour mostly consists of bashing marginalized people (and liberals)? So when we say that conservatives have no sense of humour, what we tend to mean is that they fly into a tizzy when we joke around about sex (or drugs, or cultures that they don’t understand, or we cuss, or whatever else offends them). And when they say that liberals don’t have a sense of humour, what they mean is that they don’t understand why it’s not funny that Ann Coulter hates women and wants to bomb the New York Times building. Know what I mean?
This may well be, but they vote for the fuckers who are like that. And the decisions they make do have real-life ramifications that kill people. I never understand when people are able to fully abstract politics from personality. You know, “He’s a nice guy, but he’s pro-war, pro-torture, supports putting gays in concentration camps, wants to boot people on welfare onto the streets, thinks it’s okay that my friend is in debt for the rest of his life because he had no health insurance and got sick—you know, but other than that, he’s a nice guy.”
I get your point, Sabo. I really do. And I understand that people who buy into the conservative hate speech tend to develop nasty senses of humor, and nobody should condone that. However, the average American is (unfortunately) very uninformed and apathetic and just votes the party line because their parents did. Or because Christians vote Republican. And that’s that, for them.
I know it’s complicated, but fostering contempt for a group of people based on a party label just propagates the “angry liberal” stereotype. It’s hard, but I try to avoid judging someone based on their political label. Some people may surprise you…like my conservative Christian parents, who support legalization of same sex marriage, of all things
