Of Course She Is

You guessed it–the Duggars are expecting their 18th child.

“We’re expecting!” the happy mother told TODAY co-host Meredith Vieira and the entire Arkansas clan. “Number 18!

Joshua, the Duggars’ eldest son, said the news, two days before Mother’s Day was “a shock” — if only to a point.

“I wasn’t expecting that,” the 20-year-old said. “But it’s been nine months [since the birth of the last baby], so yeah.”

Yeah. (sigh)

    Someone needs to explain this.

Because I don’t want it to happen to me.

Does Jim Bob jump right on her as soon as the baby’s out? How horrifying. But it’s a woman’s duty, after all!

Long-time lurker. Love the site and I hate that my virgin post will be a criticism, but here goes:

I am a still-fertile, Hispanic, atheist woman who married for the first time last year at the age of 37, had an abortion 23 years ago and would have another if my beloved IUD should fail. Culturally and ideologically I am the polar opposite of Michelle Duggar.

But I am also a feminist, as well as unequivocally, militantly pro-choice. This is obviously the life that Mrs. Duggar wants. She seems content. Her children seem content, well-behaved and well cared for. Their children are obviously wanted, which is the absolute ideal. She and Mr. Duggar are obviously NOT abusing or neglecting their children.

So why must we heap such vitriol upon her for her reproductive choices? It’s really offensive and really hateful. Please stop it.

If she were a private person, I wouldn’t have a word to say about her or her family, even if I knew them, which I probably wouldn’t.

However, the Duggars are very aggressively and very publicly marketing their reproductive choices, and of course the entire family that goes along with it, in the name of a very specific philosophy that is quite judgemental towards others that don’t agree with it. Why is it offensive and hateful for me to, well, I can’t say I’ve “heaped vitriol,” ever–mildly mock the superstitious, insanely health-risking, poor-family-rearing choices they are loudly pushing in my face?

Agree with L to the KS here. They seek the spotlight and push their lifestyle as Teh Awesome, therefore we can examine and critique it as Maybe Not So Much. Private people deserve privacy, but when you promote your lifestyle, we can tweak you for it.

The Duggars ARE neglecting their children, IMO. As soon as they are born, they get shuttled off to be taken care of by one of the older siblings so JimBob and J’Michelle can get workin’ on the next one. Did you know the children have to schedule an appointment if they want personal time with their mother? And the aggressive way they shield them from reality and the outside world is a form of abuse.

Also, there is absolutely no way they could afford such a large family without corporate freebies and support from TLC. Eventually the public love affair between cable teevee and this freakshow is going to end, and taxpayers are going to be left holding the bag. Excuse my language, but I totally fucking resent that.

Not to mention the enviromental catastrophe families this large are. Can you imagine the mountains of non-biodegradable waste they’ve created in dirty diapers ALONE?

I ask you: is it a coincidence that the parents look like siblings, too?
