How come I can handle that conversation with perfect grace but ordinary human interaction leaves me bewildered and upset?

Because ‘ordinary’ is based on invisible social rules the Cool Kids made up, whereas odder convos just let you be you and say whatever you honestly want to say? Just a guess.

My NYE is lovely and will continue for about the next week; a few friends have come over, because they’re done with gritting teeth through the family holiday season, or just because they love me & each other, and have no plans to leave before the weekend. It’s so damn nice that I have this horrible fear that nothing in my future will ever be so nice as this, here, now, with these people.
