This is my job now
Published by punkass marc August 15th, 2007 in Punkass!, A Punkass Original ProductionBeen sparse offerings from ye olde punkass marc lately, I know. But I’ve been switching careers the last few months, which has been a *bit* hectic.
Now I make a short weekly fantasy football show. For a living.
Bet you weren’t expecting that one!
I know I’m not helping change the world here, and I have no doubt that football’s probably borderline-repulsive to many PAB readers, but getting a job directing/producing video is pretty darn rare. I felt I had to go for it.
For the curious, our premiere went up yesterday:
With luck, my PAB schedule should get more back to normal next week. And thanks to Kyso and Sabotabby for continuing to be Teh Awws0m.
I think that sounds pretty damn cool, in spite of my lack of avid interest in football. Congrats and best of luck!
Thanks Liz! it’s definitely been a blast so far (if a little hard on my sleep schedule).
Congratulations, I’m not into football either but I hope it continues to be enjoyable!
I watched your clip, but still have NO CLUE what you are talking about. On the clip. Is fantasy football like Dungeons and dragons? Or is it like a news show about football (that’s what it seems like). But then why is it “fantasy”? Are you talking about Pretend teams?
Well, congratulations anyhow!
Congratulations! If you get the chance to do what you want to do for a living, generally it’s a good idea to take it.
Thanks again everyone!
And Kathy, fantasy football _is_ kind of like D&D, but fantasy football players might kill me for admitting that. The key is that it plays to two instincts: 1) the need to be able to predict things correctly in sports (the “i knew it” complex so many sports gamblers love), and 2) the ability to prove that you’re as smart as the guys running NFL teams. Here’s how it works: a group of people (usually 10-16) take turns selecting actual NFL players for their roster. the real stats they acquire during football games will score you points, so the better a player does in real football, the better he does for your fantasy team. Each week, you “play” another person in your league, and if all your guys outscore his or hers, you win. Many of the players’ stats will vary greatly from one year to the next, so the fun is in sifting through all the info and finding guys who will surprise and avoiding those who will disappoint. Again, like gambling. That’s the gist of it.
Oh, and btw, you came off super awesome in The Devil and Daniel Johnston. Too cool.
There are those of us out there in the PAB readership that are into fantasy football….I’ll take any help I can get with my team, so I love your new job. Rock on.
My old job ground to a halt in September and October for fantasy football, and probably well into January as well, but I was seasonal so I never saw that part. People got obsessed in a way that is very comparable to D&D players.
I like your graphics, and your hosts will be great but for now I can kind of tell they’re reading off a prompter and the one looks a bit anxious about it. Not that I should criticize - I always looked like a puffy blotchy red deer in the headlights when I was on camera, which is why I stuck to camera work.
Believe it or not, no prompter! They improvised off specific points. But we’re definitely working with them to help them loosen up.
Thanks, Punkass! Having had no time to prep for my FF draft this Saturday, I needed that.
Teh LOLPaisleys shall rule!!!1!!
