Recently I made a few mash-ups that helped me learn my way around the form. Now I’ve created one that makes me feel genuinely proud.

Hey Marc– I really liked it. Two great tastes, taste great together– but that’s the whole point of mashups, innit?

Nice job of shaking up the structure of “Fake Plastic Trees” to give a whole new shape. The drastic tempo change you’ve given it might be too great to avoid the (presumably unwanted) time distortion warbling. Then again, the moment in your cut where the tempo slows to the original sounds great– it’s unexpectedly and powerful. I’m thinking maybe the solution is to compensate for it by treating the warbling with a wider palette of mixing methods. Don’t just choose one reverb/pan/eq/etc mix, but play around a lot more with changing it over the course of the song for aural variety, perhaps in extreme ways.

What is it that made you feel really proud about this one, in comparison with the ones you’ve done before? I quite liked the others as well. Was it the thematic relations between the source songs? The bigger liberties you took in restructuring the source songs? The amount of work that went into making it? Or what?

    Hey Quinno!

Yeah, I couldn’t avoid the slight warbling, but it doesn’t bother me and I hoped it would be the same for others. Makes sense that an ear like yours would key on it, though. ;)

And I’ll select option B as the reason I like this one more than the others. I stripped Fake Plastic Trees way down, sometimes to the individual note, to create a sound that is evocative of the original but is also itself original. I guess I just really like some of the new compositions I whipped up, though I also recognize that I still have a long way to go.

wow i loved it! a very original sound.

I liked the tempo of the instrumentals. It flowed really well with 2pac’s verses - very well synched. There is one thing I would change is: I love to 2pac to bits and when I listen to him I really wanna listen to him, and Radiohead’s background “ooooooo” and “mmmmm” while 2Pac was doing his thing was distracting and interfering with my 2pac loving :(

thanks esizzle! i will continue to tweak the song, and i think i’m with you to some degree on that suggestion.
