Sen. Sam Brownback (news, bio, voting record), campaigning for president Saturday before the National Catholic Men’s Conference, questioned whether rape victims should get abortions.

Isn’t it comforting to know so many men are putting so much thought into what’s best for women? You’d think they’d ask a few women for input, but I guess it’s easier to solve someone else’s problems instead of your own. No doubt these men are looking forward to the National Catholic Women’s Conference report on how many times a guy should shake his penis after taking a leak.
Brownback offered this well-considered insight into the problem of rape-related pregnancy:
“Rape is terrible. Rape is awful. Is it made any better by killing an innocent child?”
Hmm. Leaving aside the anti-scientific idiocy of the question, I’m intrigued by the idea that Brownback believes there are people protecting abortion rights because they think it makes rape “better.” I can see the literature now:
Having cleverly disputed the theoretical claim that abortions add joy to rape, he continues:
“Does it solve the problem for the woman that’s been raped?”
Translation: because an abortion doesn’t have the Superman effect of reversing time so the rape never happens, there’s really no point in getting one. Never mind that _not_ having an abortion introduces a myriad of other problems, like having to raise a child against your will. Since an abortion can’t undo the rape, you might as well suffer 18+ years of toil and drudgery to raise some rapist’s child.
If you think about it, Brownback’s final question reveals the dark truth behind his beliefs: once a woman’s been raped, there’s nothing we can do to unsully her, meaning she’s pretty much worthless now.

So, if you rape a pregnant woman, should she get an abortion? The fetus is sort of sullied by fucking now, awash in rapist sperm.

As a woman from Kansas, Sam Brownback has been scaring the shit out of me for years. I especially like that his demand that “we need to protect innocent life. Period” doesn’t seem to apply to rape victims.

the ignorance of republicans seems to be bottomless when it comes to womens issues. rape has got to be one of the most horrendous , correction THE most horrendous act a man, or men can perpetrate against a woman. but the they want to saddle women with a baby by the bastard(s). why these guys cannot get it simply defies our concept of decency. the the stupid fuck gets up in front of god and everyone and says the things he does. another example of rightwingers being either unbelievably clueless or terminally insensitive, or both.

where do u get off comparing rape victims like that anyway. rape victims are just what i said….victims and they i cna say can have a choice to abort the baby. Now i am not for abortion one bit, but under certain circumstances like if a little girl was raped would you want her to keep the baby, if hse got pregnant? Rape victims have no control over what happens, just like little girls. But the people who should be punished for abortion are the careless ones who just have sex without a condom or any type of protection and expect not to get pregnant. Thats who should get punshed, not the victims. girls who open their legs for no protection is like 50 cent going somewhere without his bullet proof vest.
Further proof, ladies and gentlemen, that the so-called pro-life position has, as its ideological basis, the notion that women should be punished for having sex.
Newsflash, Shayla: the condom goes on the man, not the women. Both parties in sexual intercourse can practise safer sex and use contraception, but only one party may be stuck with a pregnancy if those methods fail. So your “punishment” isn’t exactly fairly administered is it?
