Competition works even for the poor.

It would work better yet if the poor were less destitute.

I’m sure glad he cleared that up.

Things would be so much better if everyone was just happy with the way things are.

Michelle, you are SO right! If everyone would just accept the station they’re born into, instead of trying to rock the boat and ask for more out of life, we’d be living in Heaven On Earthtm

Michelle, BTW, what’s your favorite Czech beer? I really was in Prague last summer (only 2-days) and truly enjoyed the experience…

I agree with you also, Michelle. The problem in the world today is not the crushing economic effects of globalized capitalism. The problem is that people can’t just shut up, accept it, and move on to more important things. Namely, the NFL Draft. Go Vikes!! WoOHooOo!!

Am I the only one here who feels Michelle lacks vision? We’re not talking about accepting the status quo, here, we’re envisioning a world in which things were actually better which we could achieve if only they were already better.

Now if you can’t be constructive like the guys at Slate, I don’t know what you can do.

Surely I’m not the only one who realizes that Harford’s comment was tongue-in-cheek?

More to the point, it was a pertinent segue into his point about microloans–that is, the relative paucity of raw resources make market mechanisms less efficient, and so any influx of money, not merely aid, is really worth more than its face value.

Well, if you just redefine “better” to mean “how things are no matter how shitty it is”, then the job is easy innit?

I like the way this is framed… “competition works..” Cooperation probably works, too… but all you get out of That is Community- ho-hum… Competition, otoh, fills rosters, and board rooms… & prisons… ^..^
