They call it the opiate of the masses because it’s weak and diluted
Published by junk science February 6th, 2007 in Punkass! From PZ, I learn that CNN wants to know why “atheists inspire such hatred” in believers that many would like to compel them to stop talking about their atheism.
Well, let me help you out, CNN. If you hate atheists so much that you need them to stop talking, it’s because you’re an atheist yourself. If you weren’t, you wouldn’t waste that kind of feeling on atheists, and you woudn’t find them so threatening. If another person’s words or opinions or existence can shake your faith hard enough to make it dizzy, it’s because your faith is already hobbling around drunk on broken stilts.
And just like banning tape recorders in classrooms won’t stop teachers from proselytizing, getting atheists to shut up won’t make your own atheism go away. It’s going to take something stronger than that. Since your current opiate is apparently about as effective as week-old coffee, just about anything should be an improvement. I suggest starting with some decent marijuana and seeing where that leads you.
WORD.
Elfinity!!! We missed you.
What really ticks me off is the people walking down the street who don’t care the slightest what other people do or don’t believe in! I just wanna slap ‘em and say, you’re either with ‘em or against ‘em; what’s it gonna be?
You know how the Jews and Christians come together to whip up on Islam…likewise, I think the atheists and pro-godders should come together to kick the collective fence-sittin’ agnostic butts. There’s just no room for that
marc - thankee, I was perilously sick, but I’m all better(er) now.
To expand a bit on the actual post (’cause I now have more coherent thoughts):
MY husband considers himself a Christian (though I’d say he’s more of a Deist), and I can tell that hanging out with me definitely shook and dispelled his faith… nay, his Faith in Religion, but his faith in God is still pretty good.
To be fair, it doesn’t necessarily take an atheist to shake faith of these peeps. Shit happens and all of a sudden, “OMG! Why is this happening? My faith didn’t protect me!” I see a lot of people take their kids to church every Sunday, and then the kids grow up and keep going - not so much because it makes sense for them, but because it’s a habit. It’s what you do. You know?
