Instead of listening to the audio of this clip, I instead listened to “Jocko Homo” for a soundtrack. There were disturbing points of congruence — the gesticulation of the initial speaker reminds me of Mark Mothersbaugh’s gesticulation at Devo shows, and a lot of the clapping and fist-pumping matched up with the call-response portions of the song.
My mother actually complained about this to me. I made the point that the College Republicans at my school busted out a wedding cake to protest Bishop Spong coming to talk about gay marriage.

OMG - is this for real? I saw a law and order episode about this ‘illegal immigrant watchguard’ oganization, and that was just fiction…. I never thought the US actually had people that VOLUNTEER to do this!!! That is just NUTS!

The good news? The idiots who join are self-identifying as bigots.
The bad new? The government is obsessed with people protesting the war, etc., and could care less about a few brown people getting in the way of “patriotic Americans”…

I have to say I disagree with the guy in the video - there are a lot of places where shouting down an invited speaker is not appropriate, but that wasn’t one of them.
Those college republicans should be more careful about the company they keep. No one is going to want to be associated with them when one of those trigger-happy racists with the guns and the cammo gear and the Rambo fantasies accidentally shoots someone - although the part of me that is a bad, bad person will laugh a little if one of them accidentally shoots another one of them.

Check out my blogroll and go to Orcinus, he’s got several series of blog posts on how these guys have connections to not just neo-confederates and Klansmen but actual neo-nazis as well, they are quite frankly only needing the proper utilisation to be a full blown SA type group on the side of the Neo-Cons. And I think they have shot some immigrants but haven’t gotten any kills yet. Though they are avoiding the professional smugglers due to how the smugglers tend to travel armed - armed gangsters versus people who use high powered hunting rifles against herbivorous animals and call it “sport”, of course they aim for the lone and unarmed immigrants.
Oh, and Governor Arnie and Jeb Bush both gave their vocal support to them at different times.
They’ve shot people and gotten away with it? That’s horrible. I thought they were explicitly instructed not to shoot people and just had the guns to look a macho and because no one can keep you from brandishing a gun about it Texas or Arizona, apparently.
The organizer in the October 11 Democracy Now video said The Minutemen are to Mexicans what the KKK is to blacks. The KKK at Columbia would be shut down too so good work by these students. Unfortunately, it’s being spun by the right-wing as leftists shutting out dissent. Hah.
They shot one in the butt I remember, which I guess put it into the same class as “crimes against monkeys” - no matter how common they are, they’re too funny for anyone to really get outraged by.

except we’re talking about the shooting of another human being, so it should be outrageous, but he got shot in the butt, and thereby ousts a human interest story about a cat stuck up a tree on the evening news.

Here’s a statement from the Columbia Protesters’ Defense Committee.
As RMildred points out, several major politicians have expressed support for the Minutemen, and Tom Tancredo is a strong supporter. The Minutemen are tied to fascists and white supremacist groups — a fact which is no surprise to anyone who’s seen them close up — so the embrace of the Minutemen by conventional conservatives is all the more disturbing.
In addition to their “patrols” of sections of the US/Mexico border, Minutemen and affiliated groups have taken to harassing day laborers around southern California. Recently, the Minutemen and several other racist groups demonstrated outside a mosque in Los Angeles. The anti-racists were outnumbered on that occasion, which points to what the stakes are, and why it actually matters that actively confront the racists with numbers and with organization.
An important thing to bear in mind in all this is that the Minutemen are reacting to the nascent immigrant rights movement — and the people protesting against the Minutemen are allied with that immigrant rights movement. This wasn’t just a marginal skirmish.
