This is just my personal experiental data here, but on my (Filipina) mum's side of the family I've got three aunts, three uncles, seven cousins, and a grandfather (grandmother's recently deceased). Extended family to the MAX -- and plenty more to boot who still live overseas. I've got literally <i>hundred</i> of other relatives whom I've never even met. But it sure as hell didn't take a "patriarchal, polygynous environment" to produce <i>this</i> particular extended family. I’m lost at the massive, massive leap from “extended families are Good Things” to “and by the by, only patriarchal, polygynous environments produce extended families.”
