    That’s just cruel.

  2. 2 Bitch | Lab

I’m thinking shows like Maury’s have a far more deleterious effect on the status of women in this society than than Deep Throat ever did.

  3. 3 punkass marc

I feel the same way she does. If you swap out pickles for godbags, that is.

  4. 4 Raine

    That was painful to watch.

  5. 5 Dykonoclast

    Yeah, that was just wrong.

I have an intense irrational fear of the colour yellow, but at least I don’t fucken flip out like that.

  6. 6 McBoing

I suppose our banner carries a little extra F-U for you, Dykon, considering all the roll-over flashes.

  7. 7 punkass marc

    I blame McBoing. He’s a color nazi.

  8. 8 SarahS

I wonder if this girl isn’t actually stitzophrenic (sp?) or something… I mean, that kind of sheer raw unadulturated terror over a pickle has got to be a sign of something deeper…. I worry that maybe she was molested as a child and this is her way of coping? It just seems surreal to me.

Meanwhile, whomever took her to that pickle factory is a sadistic fuck. You don’t break a phobia by torturing someone or patting their leg and telling her to get over it. Assholes. She needs some good slow long term therapy.

  9. 9 McBoing

I knew a guy who knew a guy that was terrified of mayonaisse. This became a point of real concern for him when he lived in a college dorm and his roommates found out about his irrational fear.

  10. 10 JackGoff

This is exactly why I hate Maury Povich. He will literally do anything to people to get people to watch his show. He’s potentially the worst person on TV. And that’s saying something, what with the black hole of Fox News.

  11. 11 amy

That’s just awful. Yeah, there is definitely something much deeper, most likely she was molested. That is not entertainment. Maury is a total ass.

  12. 12 JackGoff

That’s just awful. Yeah, there is definitely something much deeper, most likely she was molested. That is not entertainment. Maury is a total ass.

And not only does he molest her with literally TONS of pickles, he tries to calm her down about it. WHAT AN ASSHOLE! It’s like rape but much more passive-aggressive. Disgusting.

  13. 13 SarahS

MBoing - my best friend’s college boyfriend was afraid of fish. Literally terrified. I mean, pictures of fish didn’t bother him (much, he hid it well) but a bunch of his dorm mates once bought a betafish in one of those little bowls and put it on his desk chair. He had to call my friend to come over and take it out of the room because he couldn’t be in the room with it. I guess it might seem funny to an outsider, but I saw him once nearly crap his pants (his words not mine) over some minnows that a couple kids caught in a bucket once when we were at a local lake, and that was not funny at all. Poor guy wouldn’t even go swimming, he spent all day on the beach.

  14. 14 Kate

It is indeed disgusting and disgusting that the entire audience was there to be entertained.

She does need intensive therapy and i would agree that more than likely the fear came from a real trauma exerienced when she was very young and the visual association remains.

I agree with bitch lab and others, I worked nights and had a teevee once and was subjected to his ‘find my baby’s daddy’ routines which were beyond horrid.

And you know, Jack i was thinking the same thing, like she’s being violated all over again, but by a thousand people at once.

  15. 15 junk science

I wonder how much of that was an act the producers told her to put on.* Because it’s amusing to make fun of people with mental disorders.

*If I can’t trust Judge Judy, I don’t trust anyone.

  16. 16 JackGoff

    stitzophrenic (sp?)

    Schizophrenic, sarah.

  17. 17 R. Mildred

I wonder if this girl isn’t actually stitzophrenic

Schitzoids are paranoid and suffer from audial and/or visual hallucinations.

This is nothing like that, I’ve seen a freind torn apart by the condition so I’d like it put on the record that I really hate the way schitzoid is often a generic catchall term for any sort of psychotic break, which makes it very hard to deal with sufferers because you have to fight their fear of the stigma attached with it.

Fat people are lazy and deserve to be mocked, as do furries, mimes and juggalugs. Bastards.

  18. 18 JackGoff

I totally agree R. Mildred. My aunt is schizophrenic and anybody who uses the term “schizo” to mean any crazy person usually gets a earful from me, because I’ve seen what it does and “crazy” is just a stupid way to describe it. “Debilitating,” maybe.

Anyway, just to say (because I’m a nitpicker), it’s “schizoid.”

  19. 19 flawedplan

This is a great thread, no one talks this openly.

About terminology–the labels are metaphors, there’s no falsifiable medical test that prove their existence. That said, schizoid is not classified as a mental illness but a personality disorder, as is schizotypal.

Schizophrenia is designated as a mental illness.

A big difference is that schizophrenia is considered a biologic brain disease. Personality disorders have more to do with maladjustment.

Activists disagree that major mental illness is biologic, and believe trauma is the cause of mental illness. This is the crux of the war between psychiatric rights patients and mainstream psychiatry, which denies therapeutic recovery and prefers to shove expensive, fairly useless and debilitating drugs down the throats of consumers. The stigma of the biologic model is exponential compared to the trauma model, and it’s become conventional wisdom. Everywhere you go you will hear that mental illness is a brain disease, and its symptoms can (and should) be tamed by medical treatments; pills and electroshock.
    Dissidents call that horseshit.
I’m labeled schizophrenic, to be specificer, schizoaffective disorder, but before big psychopharm took over I was able to get the long term therapeutic help so many mentally ill are now denied. I only take a fraction of the meds most schizophrenics take, and I am ten times more functional than most, but I was able to get 2 decades of state funded therapy to get me here. It is a travesty, it’s criminal, anti-psychotics are chemical handcuffs, they eat the personality, and often people have no say as to whether they want this. Forced treatment is a reality in this country.

Hope this wasn’t too much information, by the way I do give people cause for making fun of me sometimes, it’s more to do with cognitive brainfairts, temporal confusion, forgetting how to use a phone or making a pot of coffee and getting the procedure wrong, it’s screwey enough that I’m considered totally disabled. Still as far as I’m concerned Maury Povich has more troubling problems than ‘ll ever have no matter how I trip up.

  20. 20 McBoing

I have to admit I rankled at the casual use of schizophrenia on this thread. I attended the funeral of a man who wrestled with it since his puberty and finally gave up on the pharmaceutical madness — and eventually went downhill after being unable to access cognitive-behavioral and/or other talk therapies in addition to his meds. It was all the more disappointing because we could see it happening way back down the road but nothing was in his hands. One more reason to hate insurance companies.

  21. 21 flawedplan

But it seems this kind of talk is more possible on this blog than anywhere else in blogistan. Psychophobia is real, people clam up. This thread is a breakthrough.

My condolences on the loss of your friend and teacher. I’ve attended those funerals too and they have a way of radicalizing a person, there will be more casualties until massive structural change happens. I am out of my mind with worry for certain strangely gifted and tormented friends, here is a tribute to all who’ve left this plane and for all that’s still to come:

    Outside This Bar
    American Music Club

    The hospital wouldn’t admit you
    So we go home again
Right back to the same old room
Right back to the same old thing
But you know you’re just another girl
Come from some carry-out in hell
You’re just another story of how they fucked up the life
    Of a sweet girl
We’ll sit and look at the street
Watch the El Dorados roll by
    You can’t look your murderers,
You can’t look them in the eye
But you know they can always spot you
    From a mile away
They give you anything you want
    They’ll do anything you say
And outside this bar there’s no one alive
Outside this bar how does anyone survive
    Together you and me
you know we’ve gotta destroy this world
C’mon darling we’ve gotta destroy this world
    And I remember when
Your girlfriend would put you on display
You’d be the life of the party
‘Til they come and drag you away
But in the end we’ll watch the pattern
    As it begins to tear
We’ll see the chaos that’s underneath
All the clothes that the angels wear
And outside this bar there’s no one alive
Outside this bar how does anyone survive
    Together you and me
you know we’ll never destroy this world
C’mon baby I wish we could destroy this world
    Outside this bar

Together you and me turn this quiet night into silence
Together we’ll turn this love into violence

  22. 22 flea

That was unbelievably cruel, if it was true. I’m afraid of roaches, and if somebody came out with two big platefuls of them, I would have acted the same way.

  23. 23 junk science

Especially if they were alive. And squirming.

Excuse me. I have to go lie down.

  24. 24 Raine

    oh my. roaches.

i once faced the prospect of spending the entire night trapped in the bathroom because there were two large roaches sitting in the doorway.

    luckily my mom saved me.

  25. 25 Patrick

Dykonoclast, as far as I know the color yellow naturally has a fear and attention effect on people. Hence the color yellow on school buses, and the color yellow for the warning light between green and red.
Maybe yours is just a little more advanced.

  26. 26 Hugh Jass

Another talk show hoax contributing to the deterioration of society; or not.

  27. 27 Kyso Kisaen

McBoing really knows how to write those posts that get zombi threads that just won’t die. I’m impressed. It seems like long after humans evolve into pure balls of energy and leave the earth forever, the energy balls will still pause every once in a while to tells us what they think about Brangilina or picklephobic women.

  28. 28 JackGoff

I keep telling you people. We’re all oppressed by the McBoingiarchy.

  29. 29 Pickleboy

LOL Funnys. This well funny vid imo mabe she was molested by a pickle? :) Gud vid imo :D

  30. 30 Brian

I think it’s hilarious. People 30 years ago didn’t have phobias like this 30 years ago, maybe thats because they’d be called an idiot.

  31. 31 Ben Lee

OMFG that is the funniest thing ever, she is a loser.

  32. 32 Jess

That video’s so sick. Everyone’s afraid of something; just because this girl is afraid of something so obviously irrational everyone’s completely victimising her. Millions of people are afraid of the dark, spiders, losing things; all totally harmless, but everyone’s humiliating her because she’s afraid of pickles.

Making her face it. I actually can’t begin to describe how stupid this man is and how dim-witted the audience is laughing. And by the way, there were overly irrational fears thirty years ago; people just didn’t showcase them the way we do now - it’s like the new ‘freak shows.’

(I’m from the UK and don’t know this show, but I hope if I ever go to the USA the people there are far nicer than him.)

  33. 33 James

    Silly ass pickle hating schizo-crazy-persons!

  34. 34 Kyso Kisaen

McBoing, you are a goddam genius. You really are.

  35. 35 McBoing

McBoing: Bringing the crazy since 1973.

  36. 36 StevieMC

I’m pretty sure he knew saying get over it wouldn’t cure her.

Therapy? Facing your fear would be the best way to beat it.

Funny. A woman features on this episode and suddenly all men a sad chauvenists.

That video was highly entertaining for me. If that woman was so unfairly treated poor her stuff, why did she agree to go on the show?

  37. 37 stupid crap

THe fact that the show never really got to the bottom of the phobia, such as it is probably some terrible childhood trama inapropriate for day time TV, is fucking disusting and cruel. No one has a phobia like that without some REASON.

  38. 38 Nick

Its brought such an enlightening discussion. Bummer is…

It’s fake and shes now a quite rich drama student.

  39. 39 Pickle Monster

I am the pickle monster. I like to eat 18 year old girls. Boohahahahahaha.

  40. 40 Pickle Monster

I am the pickle monster. I have come to eat your flesh. Boohahahaha Boohahaha. Come on get a sense of humor. Its nothing classical conditioning cant cure. Even little Albert would agree.

  41. 41 bones

    I Need help.

I have a terrible fear of flying bullets, knife weilding maniacs and falling from great hieghts onto parked cars or concrete.

I can’t walk ito a hail of gunfire without sh***ng my pants and when I am on a tall building I just can’t bring myself to jump!

  42. 42 Stinkbottom

    It was a bit mean for Maury to antagonize her with pickles. I was almost expecting him to have someone come out in a giant pickle costume and chase her around.;

  43. 43 Kyso Kisaen

McBoing, what the hell is going on here?

  44. 44 Dykonoclast

I don’t know what the hell is going on here, either, but someone seems to have addressed my xanthophobia 5 months after I expressed it. How queer.

  45. 45 JackGoff

Voodoo rays, mind control, McBoing is a google magnet being from a distant planet.

Any or all of these things.

  46. 46 Kristen

The girl who was afraid of mustard is my moms friends sister and she wasn’t actually afraid of mustard. She just faked it to get a free trip to new york. shes pathetic. woah. i just realized that as you type, your comment appears under the preveiw thing. as your typing. haha. cool.

  47. 47 Luvinthebass

If she’s afraid of pickles then she’s prolly afraid of cocks.

  48. 48 liz

that was horrible to watch. i can sympathize with her…. thanks to obsessive compulsive disorder, i have 8 irrational phobias. until you have a phobia you have to deal with, don’t make fun of her.

  49. 49 JACKASS

the phoebia is there in years with her AND HOW IS IT FUCKING POSSIBLE TO CURE IT OVERNIGHT???? YOUR JUST AN IDIOT MAURY!!

  50. 50 caile

This girl went on the show knowing it concerned her pickle “phobia.” She knew it was going to be seen by millions of people. No one hogtied her and dragged her there, she went there voluntarily and of course enjoyed compensation and a free trip, etc.

And yes Maury’s a sleazebag, but as long as there are attention-seeking schmucks willing to go on national TV and humiliate themselves, these shows will continue. There are much more effective places to get “cured” of a phobia than a 1-hour TV talk show notorious for its drama-fests. Yet she chose to go this route, so if people find it hilarious, she brought it on herself.

I don’t mean to sound mean-spirited, because I myself have a few not-so-normal phobias. But I find them embarrassing and certainly would not parade them around on a sensationalist TV show. So IF she’s even sincere about the depth of her phobia or if it was caused by some horrible trauma, she needs to be seen by professionals, not by Povich with his camera crew and jeering audience members.

Bottom line: She’s either an idiot or an attention-seeker, and I don’t feel all that sorry for her, and I laughed my ass off at the video. Sue me. ;-)

  51. 51 Cameron

I don’t know, the show host may be a bastard, but that was pretty funny still. Why on earth would she agree to go to a pickle plant (Hah. Pickle plant sounds funny) if she was scared of it? I don’t know, but it was REALLY funny.

Oh, and my favorite line from the comments is “Everyone’s afraid of something; just because this girl is afraid of something so obviously irrational everyone’s completely victimising her.” Heheh. Yeah. It’s so obviously irrational that it’s funny. It may be depressing humor, but it is most certainly humor. Irrational things can be funny. The reason no one laughs at people who are scared of heights (At least not very often, and certainly not as hard) is because a lot of people are scared of heights. Not many people are scared of pickles, and probably not to that extent, either. Instant comedy classic.

  52. 52 dhdude

i think that the way maury deals with her problem is stupid. he just showed her pickles instead of talking about her fear.

  53. 53 jkillah1

I’m afraid of bees for sure. Ever since I got stung by one when I was little. I’m also afraid of bugs, but I don’t run away screaming at the sight of bees. Heck, if there’s a bug or something I’ll usually try to kill it, even if it’s a bee or wasp flying around in my room. Of course, if I have to move stuff with bugs on it, I get scared that they’re gonna crawl inside my clothes or something, but other than that I’m fine.

But seriously, pickles? At least be afraid of something that makes sense! Something that can hurt you or make you sick or something, not pickles! Maybe if you’re allergic to pickles and you almost died… IDK.

  54. 54 Greg

She must have had a terrible experience and associated it with pickles, ie maybe she was sexually assaulted when she was younger and the offender referred to his penis as a pickle, she dealt with the abuse by suppressing the memory and associates pickles with the terrible experience. Just a theory…

  55. 55 punkass marc

Why is it McBoing’s old posts that always seem to have immortal comment threads?

  56. 56 Tai

Yeah, someone posted the video in this gaming IRC chat I was in, and I commented on how she probably had pickles shoved up her butt when she was younger and probably hates anal sex. Or, maybe it was the other hole. Or both.

I personally thought the video was hilarious. That all said, you definitely don’t get that freaked out over seeing something for no reason at all. Definitely going to go for the deeper story theory, and I already explained what I mean by that :p.

  57. 57 David

Her stepdad must have shoved a few hundred pickles in her pussy when she was young, no doubt about it, is there anyone scared of brussel sprouts?

  58. 58 Kyso Kisaen

McBoing brings the winners to PAB every time.

  59. 59 Bernie

Frankly, I feel sorry for Maury Povich.
